Question by Lisa B: What is a good antivirus program out there to use?
I purchased a used computer about 10 months ago and the guy had put Norton Antivirus on it before I bought it. It is now up for renewal and I don’t know if I should renew it or not. Is having an antivirus necessary? What are some good programs? Are there any out there that are free to use? Should I stay with the Norton Antivirus? Please help me….I only have 6 more days left with this antivirus left.

Having an up to date anti-virus is very important (it only takes 2 minutes on average for your computer to be compromised). Norton is bloatware and I would not recommend it at all. If you want to pay for an anti-virus Kaspersky is the best. If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but I leave the decision to you (install only one):

1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It’s cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update

Question by Chevita127: What type of antivirus should I get on a Mac running XP with Bootcamp?
I just got a mac running Snow Leopard 10.6 and windows XP Home through bootcamp. I plan to use surf the web in both platforms. What type of antivirus would do the best job? Is it recommended to install one antivirus for each OS? Does it make a difference if I choose to run XP with Parallels instead of bootcamps?

Here is Microsoft’s page for security providers:

You will only need antivirus in Windows, at the moment. If you run in Parallels, you will still need antivirus. I would recommend something like Kaspersky or Trend Micro. They’re really good, efficient, and they are extremely accurate. They also catch many types of viruses that most programs like Norton will just “leave behind.”
Microsoft Security Essentials is also a very good one and it is made by Microsoft themselves. If you’re looking for a fully featured security suite that doesn’t cost you a dime (it’s free), MS Security Essentials is for you.

Question by Esmy: What is the ideal number of Antivirus a laptop should have?
Hey everyone, that reads this.
My question is what is the ideal number of antivirus a laptop should have.

My laptop has Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 installed when I first got it. Best Buy had installed it.
And I just installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, mostly because I have this installed in my desktop and its really good.

Im just pretty much wondering if those two are ok.

Thanks.

I would prefer having 2 virus programs, reason is that even if one of them is not able to detect the virus the other would certainly detect it.

Hope I have answered your question.

I tried Spy Sweeper and found this program is incompatible with Kaspersky especially when trying to update Spy Sweeper. What other anti-spyware programs are out there that can work with Kaspersky?
